By pushing the rear window defroster button with the car running, a small door would pop open, revealing a screw, and then, using an Allen key, a hidden compartment would open. Inside the space, as big as the trunk and accessible only by lowering the rear seats, there were 10 kilos and 850 grams of pure cocaine, divided into 10 blocks. Drugs that, if they had been sold, could have brought in over a million euros. This is what the Bologna Flying Squad officers found on board a Volvo traveling from Bari to Bologna. The driver was a 66-year-old Italian born in Albania, who was arrested on charges of possession of drugs for the purpose of dealing, with the aggravating circumstance of a large quantity.

The route from Bari to Bologna

The 58-year-old’s Volvo entered the motorway at the Bari Nord toll booth at 7:40 a.m. on July 1. The Bologna Flying Squad, after receiving a report, followed his movements to Castel San Pietro Terme, where the Flying Squad cars intervened around 2:20 p.m.

The car was followed and forced to leave the motorway at the Bologna Fiere toll booth. The check, also given the agitation of the driver, immediately turned into a search. The man, who cooperated, showed the officers how to unlock the hidden compartment, already identified by the dog Barak of the Bologna Police Headquarters Canine Unit. The drugs were found inside. The man, with no criminal record, is now in the Reggio Emilia prison awaiting the validation hearing.
