Prato, the ride in memory of Giovanni Iannelli

Prato, July 2, 2024 – In Carmignano, there is a mural that tells the story of Giovanni Iannelli, a promising young cyclist whose life was tragically cut short in Piedmont at the finish line of a cycling race. This mural, in addition to being a visual tribute, is a powerful call to reflection on the safety of cyclists on our roads. Giovanni’s tragic story, for which justice has not yet provided answers, is carried forward with tireless determination by his father Carlo, who continues to fight so that his son’s memory can help avoid similar tragedies in the future. Every day, we ride through the city streets without being aware of the risks that cyclists face. Giovanni’s story reminds us how fragile the balance between sporting passion and safety is, a balance that unfortunately, that day, was broken.

In memory of Giovanni, on Saturday 6 July at 8 am there will be a commemorative bike ride starting from Piazza del Duomo in Prato. Carlo, Giovanni’s father, along with many others, will set off for Carmignano, covering those 10 kilometres that have become a symbol of a tradition of solidarity and remembrance. This event is not only a moment to remember a young life taken too soon, but also an opportunity to raise awareness in the community about the importance of road safety. The start is set for 9 am and the arrival in Carmignano is expected around 10 am, followed by a small ceremony. It is a symbolic gesture that combines sport, memory and civil commitment, it is a powerful call to reflect on the safety of cyclists on our roads and of runners at cycling races, reminding us that every pedal stroke can make a difference.
