Granaio Italia. Bartolini (Cia Umbria): Our victory to safeguard cereal growers

“After our pressure, the establishment of the National Telematic Register to protect Made in Italy returns to the Agriculture Decree”. This was stated by Matteo Bartolini, president of Cia Agricoltori italiani dell’Umbria and national vice president, underlining how “the constant pressure of Cia-Agricoltori Italiani has been rewarded, which has fought from the very beginning for the establishment of the Telematic Register on cereal stocks, an indispensable tool to bring transparency to the markets, protect Made in Italy production and quality for consumers.

It is a victory for us and for all the producers, which represents the recognition of the union action of Cia to safeguard cereal growers, to promote the true Made in Italy and to protect quality for consumers. An opportunity for all of Umbria where an ever-improving cultivation technique adopted by cereal entrepreneurs has contributed to enhancing production also in qualitative terms, now an essential prerequisite for local agri-food”.

In Umbria, according to Istat data, in 2022 the total area cultivated with durum wheat amounted to 22,650 hectares, for 870 thousand quintals of harvested production; while 26,980 hectares were for soft wheat, for a production of 1,050,000 quintals.

With the National Telematic Register, in fact, it will be possible to monitor the consistency of cereal stocks, also in order to introduce useful information to the market to reduce price volatility. Not only that, the objective of Granaio Italia is to guarantee the consumer the complete traceability of grains in all the different stages of the product and to offer them the tools useful for an informed choice of the product to bring to their table.

“These are the answers that our farmers and consumers are waiting for – adds Bartolini -. Monitor cereal production, promote national wheat by focusing on quality, put a stop to wild imports, ensure fair prices. And it is even more important now, at a time when profitability is not guaranteed and sowing is decreasing, with a drop in national areas cultivated with durum wheat of about 130 thousand hectares and the drought that will lead to a cut in production. Now we will also shortly ask for the opening of the supply chain table”.
