Surveyor crushed to death by machinery in railway construction site

It happened in a railway construction site in Meina, on Lake Maggiore. The 118 rescue operations that intervened on site were useless. The victim is Carlo Maletta, born in 1967, originally from Mantello, in the province of Sondrio.

He was called Charles Maletta and he was 57 years old, the man who was the victim this morning – Tuesday 2 July – of a very serious work accident a Meanin the province of Novara, in the Vicolo Pozzo area, in the town on Lake Maggiore. The surveyor from Valtellina lost his life crushed by a machine while he was working in a railway construction site.

As far as we know, the accident occurred within the area of worksitelocated at the North entrance of the tunnel that passes under Villa Faraggiana. The 118 emergency services intervened on site, but unfortunately there was nothing that could be done for the worker. The railway police were also present to carry out the necessary investigations.

The surveyor was part of a contracting company that is carrying out the work on behalf of Rfi on the Domodossola-Arona-Milan route, whose railway circulation had been interrupted since last June 8th for the works to adapt the tracks to modern freight trains and to equip the Ertms safety systems.

“Rete Ferroviaria Italiana expresses its condolences and closeness to the family of the worker of a contractor, who died on a work area along the Milan-Domodossola railway line”. This is the official Rfi press release regarding what happened in Meina. “The dynamics of what happened are being examined by the competent authorities to whom Rfi is offering the widest collaboration – the note continues – checks are underway also by Rfi”.
