Singer-songwriter Marco Castoldi, better known as Morgan, has been acquitted of the charge of aggravated defamation against his colleague Cristian Bugatti, aka Bugo. The judge of the Court of Imperia, Marta Bossi, has ruled that “the fact does not exist”, concluding a case that began after the controversial performance at the 2020 Sanremo Festival.
“Congratulations to the lawyers Rossella Gallo and Leonardo Cammarata – commented Morgan – Today is not my victory but that of commitment and seriousness. Both because the lawyers studied in a deep and detailed way and worked with self-denial and because trust was given to the truth, and it triumphed, as Cioran teaches: the truth in the final instance always triumphs”.
Morgan and Bugo had participated together at the festival with the song “Sincero”, but their collaboration ended in a stormy way when Morgan, during the evening of covers, had changed the lyrics of the song live. This gesture had led to Bugo leaving the stage and the subsequent disqualification of the duo from the competition.
The prosecutor had asked for Morgan to be sentenced to one year and six months in prison, but the court found that there were insufficient elements to configure the crime of defamation. Bugo, who had felt offended by the modified words in the text and by Morgan’s subsequent statements, had refused an apology and compensation of three thousand euros.
The episode, which caused a great media outcry and left the audience and the presenters Amadeus and Fiorello astonished, remains one of the most discussed moments in the recent history of the Sanremo Festival.
