Culture halved: the Superintendency of Umbria is missing half of its staff

The lack of staff in the cultural heritage sector is assuming increasingly alarming proportions. A clear example of this is the situation of the Supervision Archeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of Umbria (Sabap), where a participatory meeting took place today assembly of workers in the cultural heritage sector in Umbria, organised by Fp Cgil.

In 2016, Sabap could count on a total staff of 120 units, today we have dropped to 48, exactly half of the staff which would be foreseen in the organizational chart (96). There is a lack of assistants in the technical and supervisory areas, as well as architectsengineers, computer scientists and art historians. The situation is so critical that it has forced the Superintendent to take on the architectural and landscape protection functions of over half of the municipalities in the region (56 out of 92).

“We asked the minister Sangiuliano to reopen hiring and give free access to all those who have been found suitable in the competitive procedures – said Valeria Giunta, national coordinator of Cultural Heritage for the Fp Cgil who participated in the assembly – We have asked to reintegrate, starting from territories like this, the professional skills that are missing: archivists, librarians, archaeologists, art historians, etc. Unfortunately, the minister has decided to focus on different resources, because evidently it is not among his priorities to relaunch this sector through the figures strategic for its functioning”.

“We are convinced that art and culture are the primary driving force of development and wealth for a territory like Umbria – added Desiree Marchetti, general secretary of the Fp Cgil of Umbria – and it is truly absurd that we still struggle to understand that without public workers in culture and fine arts there can be no development for this sector. With organic halved it is difficult and with enormous sacrifices to guarantee the opening of museums, archives, libraries and archaeological sites. We turn to the institutions and politics of our region: what do you expect to invest in this sector with enormous development potential?”.
