It was two teams of firefighters from the Modica Detachment who put out the fire that developed within the perimeter of the San Biagio landfill, the old landfill which for a decade was the place where the municipalities of Modica, Ispica and Pozzallo as well as Scicli they delivered the waste, giving it the label (but also the burden) of a district plant. Only shortly after midday did the firefighters manage to get the better of the flames that developed especially in a part of the external perimeter of the plant. Flames that, it is not excluded, were started specifically to eliminate and destroy, it is presumed. the “passage” outside the bag of waste. The strong wind that blew across the entire territory, not only in the coastal area but also in the hinterland, put the work of the firefighters to the test, who had to work hard to get the better of the flames that developed in San Biagio.
The abusive “practice” of dumping waste along the perimeter of the landfill is nothing new. Of course, by unknown persons.
The San Biagio landfill has been a major problem for the Municipality of Scicli for years: both because of the leachate that, in the winter months, comes out of the mountain of waste, and because of the fire risks that are periodically around the corner. Yet the environmental health offices constantly ensure the monitoring of the places while waiting for the completion of the works for the construction of the CCR, the municipal collection center that should greatly help the management of waste and its disposal. “We are waiting for the report from the Fire Department – says Mayor Mario Marino – from the report we will know the exact cause of the fire. The local police went to the scene to check the state of the place and they also wrote a report on what happened.. We are very concerned about what often happens near the landfill. It seems that here, right in the perimeter area, unknown people deliver waste to avoid disposing of it properly and according to the rules of separate waste collection. Our offices are on alert to stop this bad habit”.
