Granaio Italia: A step forward for Umbria’s cereal growers

The establishment of the National Telematic Register, a bulwark for Made in Italy, has been reinstated in the Agriculture Decree, thanks to the incessant commitment of Cia Agricoltori Italiani. This is what Matteo Bartolini, president of Cia Agricoltori Italiani of Umbria and national vice president, stated. Bartolini highlighted how the tireless commitment of Cia-Agricoltori Italiani has been recognized, since the organization has fought from the beginning for the establishment of the Telematic Register on cereal stocks.

This tool is essential to ensure transparency in the markets, protect Made in Italy production and ensure quality for consumers. This is a victory for Cia and for all producers, which represents the recognition of Cia’s union action in defense of cereal growers, in promotion of the true Made in Italy and in protection of quality for consumers.

Umbria, where cereal entrepreneurs have adopted increasingly advanced cultivation techniques, has contributed to enhancing production also in qualitative terms, an essential prerequisite for local agri-food. According to Istat data, in 2022 in Umbria the total area cultivated with durum wheat was 22,650 hectares, with a harvested production of 870 thousand quintals; while the area cultivated with soft wheat was 26,980 hectares, with a production of 1,050,000 quintals.

Thanks to the National Telematic Register, it will be possible to monitor cereal stocks, providing the market with useful information to reduce price volatility. The goal of Granaio Italia is to guarantee the consumer complete traceability of grains in all the different stages of the product, providing the necessary tools for an informed choice of the product to bring to their table.

Bartolini adds: “These are the answers that our farmers and consumers are waiting for. Monitor cereal production, promote national wheat by focusing on quality, put a stop to wild imports, ensure fair prices. This is even more important now, at a time when profitability is not guaranteed and sowing is decreasing, with a drop in national areas cultivated with durum wheat of about 130 thousand hectares and the drought that will lead to a cut in production. Now we will also shortly ask for the opening of the supply chain table”.
