Bernardino Realino, the Saint of Carpi – The Saint of the day

For years Lapressa.it has offered free and independent information to its readers without any kind of public contribution. Private advertising covers part of the costs, but it is not enough. For this reason we ask those who read us daily, and follow us, to give us, if they believe, a contribution based on their possibilities. Even a small support, multiplied by the tens of thousands of Modena and Emilia-Romagna people who read us daily, is fundamental.

Today, July 2, we celebrate San Bernardino Realino. Bernardino was born in Carpi in 1530; his is an illustrious family. In his studies, everything attracts him: classical literature and later, in Bologna, philosophy, then medicine. Finally, at 26, Bernardino graduates in civil and canon law.

The Saint’s father is a collaborator of the Bishop of Trento, Cristoforo Madruzzo. The prelate takes the learned Bernardino under his protection and sets him on the path to public office. He becomes podestà in Felizzano Monferrato, then ‘tax lawyer’ in Alessandria. After other assignments, the Saint passes to the service of the viceregal government of Naples. Here his career ends, Bernardino decides to become a Jesuit priest and in 1567 he becomes master of novices. Seven years later he creates, in Lecce, a college to which he will dedicate himself until his death.

The activity of the Jesuit father is also aimed at the people of the city, without distinction, Bernardino addresses the rich and the poor, the educated and the ignorant.
The Saint is patient in dealing with situations, needs, miseries and miracles are attributed to him.

Before dying, in Lecce in 1616, Bernardino Realino becomes the Patron Saint of the city. The governors of the municipality go to visit him officially and ask the Saint to become the protector of Lecce, from generation to generation, forever. The dying man agrees, calm and happy.
Having made this promise, he died at the age of 86. Pope Pius XII proclaimed him a Saint in 1947.
San Bernardino is not only the Patron Saint of Lecce, but also of Carpi. Happy name day to anyone named Bernardino or Bernardo.
