The Municipality of Bari announces that, as part of the risk management activities associated with Ostreopsis ovata blooms (more commonly known as toxic algae) on the Italian coasts, ARPA Puglia – Natural Environments Operational Unit – Regional Sea Centre communicated today that in the sample taken last June 19 in the San Giorgio area, near the Il Trullo beach at the bathing point code IT016072006012, a high concentration of Ostreopsis ovata was detected above the limits indicated by the specific New Guidelines of the Ministry of Health (ISS 14/19).

In the event of a certified bloom, it is advisable to avoid staying along rocky coasts during storm surges and it is advisable to limit food consumption of marine organisms that could accumulate the toxin. If symptoms attributable to toxic algae are present, it is necessary to move away from the beach. Children, the elderly and people with respiratory diseases (for example asthmatics and allergies) should be particularly protected. Symptoms are usually transitory and regress spontaneously within a few hours; if they persist or worsen, it is advisable to consult your doctor.

In the map drawn and related to the monitoring from June 15 to 30, we find a red flag near Bari San Giorgio and Bisceglie that indicates an abundant presence. Discrete presence in Torre Canne, minimal in Santo Spirito, Molfetta and Giovinazzo.
