Four environmental islands planned for 2025
Four environmental islands will be built in Brescia in 2025 in the neighborhoods of Porta Milano, Don Bosco, Chiesanuova and Lamarmora.
The operation is part of the actions envisaged by the Sustainable Urban Development Strategy (SUS) called “School at the center of the future. The regeneration of the south-west area of Brescia starts with schools”. A project aimed at the redevelopment of peripheral urban areas, through interventions of social innovation, territorial animation and regeneration of public spaces. The SUS strategy is divided into a series of points: infrastructure, environment, construction, social and culture.
In recent months, the flagship project of the strategy that will change the face of Don Bosco by 2027 has begun, where the new school and cultural center of the neighborhood will be built. The first operational step was the inauguration of Spazio Lampo, a temporary laboratory that was the basis of the participatory co-design process with citizens for the creation of the future Don Bosco Community Hub: a sustainable and inclusive cultural center, which will host services in the social, cultural, recreational and sports fields.
Another of the actions included in the SUS Plan (action 3) concerns the promotion of pedestrian mobility for children and young people on the journey from home to school.
To promote gentle mobility and safety for students
For this reason, with the aim of promoting soft mobility and allowing safe access to school buildings in the South-West area of the city, the Municipal Administration has recently approved the executive project that will lead, in 2025, to the creation of 4 environmental islands in the neighborhoods of Porta Milano, Don Bosco, Chiesanuova and Lamarmora, as foreseen in the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (PUMS). The model of the “environmental islands” includes the creation of cycle paths, the establishment of pedestrian areas and 30 Zones.
The numbers
The project includes the implementation of 48 interventions distributed across the 4 districts: the creation of 23 entrance gates to the Zone 30, 22 interventions to make road intersections safe and 3 depaving interventions.
The choice of interventions is the result of a series of assessments not referring to a single stretch or intersection, but analysed organically, also in light of the data relating to accidents, and shared with the four neighbourhood councils involved since the start of the project activity.
The total amount of the project is € 2,350,000, of which € 1,850,000 financed by the SUS Call (European structural and investment funds 2021-2027 ERDF disbursed through the Lombardy Region) and € 500,000 with the Municipality’s own resources.
Award of the tender
The tender that will be announced during the summer and that will be awarded according to the most economically advantageous offer criterion will be awarded by November. The works will then begin, and are expected to be completed in 2025.
