Trani becomes a “sea turtle friendly” municipality

From today, Trani is also among the municipalities friends of sea turtles, thanks to its participation in the LIFE Turtlenest project, co-financed by the European Union and coordinated by Legambiente.

The project aims to conserve and protect the sea turtle Caretta Caretta from threats related to human disturbance in its nesting sites in the western Mediterranean basin (on the French, Spanish and Italian coasts).
The path also aims to evaluate the impact of climate change on the nesting of the species which, due to rising temperatures, is becoming increasingly frequent on our beaches.

Numerous activities are planned until 2028, including the creation of an international network, and, also in Trani, the adoption of shared procedures and best practices to mitigate threats to emerging nesting sites, coastal monitoring, training of beach resort managers and awareness campaigns for citizens.

The project partners are Legambiente (Italy), Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn (Italy), the University of Rome La Sapienza (Italy), Universitat de Barcelona (Spain), Fundació Universitària Balmes (Spain), Ente Nazionale della Cinofilia Italiana, Cestmed (France), Basilicata Region (Italy), Puglia Region (Italy), Regional Agency for Environmental Protection of Tuscany (Italy), Lazio Region (Italy), Campania Region (Italy), ISPRA- Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (Italy).
