Umbria, work-related deaths, seven deaths in five months

Umbria, with seven deaths in five months, confirms its position among the Italian regions with the highest incidence of fatal accidents at work. This is what emerges from an analysis by the Vega Engineering Safety and Environment Observatory. This is what La Nazione Umbria writes today. The index of ‘incidence‘ used by the Observatory indicates the number of workers who die during work activity in a specific region or province, in relation to the number of employed people in the same area. This index allows to compare the phenomenon of accidents between different realities, even if characterized by a different working population.

Unfortunately, Umbria, together with Valle d’Aosta, Trentino-Alto Adige, CampaniaEmilia-Romagna, Sicily and Puglia, are in the ‘red zone’. These regions have an accident incidence higher than 25% compared to the national average. In the ‘orange zone’ we find Calabria. In the ‘yellow zone’ are Abruzzo, Liguria, Lombardy, Piedmont, Tuscany, Basilicata, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Molise, while Lazio, Sardinia, Marche and Veneto are in the ‘white zone’.

Analysing in more detail, it is noted that in the province of Perugia there were six deaths at work from January 1st to May 31st of this year, with an incidence of 21.8 compared to the national average, on a number of employed people equal to 278 thousand. situation it is slightly better in the Terni area: here only one death was recorded, with approximately 83 thousand employed and an incidence of 12 points (yellow zone).

In the first five months of the year, the Observatory has drawn up an identikit of the workers most at risk. This data continues to be worrying among older workers. In fact, the highest incidence is recorded in the age group of workers over sixty-five (with an incidence of 55.0), followed by the age group of workers between 55 and 64 (with an incidence of 19.4). The most affected sector remains construction.

“Having almost reached the halfway point of the year, the projection for the end of 2024 of victims at work already seems to be tragic and similar to that of previous years”, explains Mauro Rossato, president of the Observatory on Safety at Work and Vega Engineering Environment of Mestre. From January to May 2024, there were 369 victims, 11 more than at the end of May 2023. Unfortunately, compared to the same period last year, deaths at work increased by +5.5%. “But as always,” Rossato claims, “the incidence is the true indicator of risk for workers in our country, since we are talking about victims in relation to the working population.”
