Water crisis: possible request for state of emergency for Basilicata

The Basilicata Region evaluates the declaration of a state of water emergency during a meeting with various institutional and technical bodies.

Yesterday evening, at the Verrastro Hall of the Basilicata Region, a meeting of the technical table was held to address the water crisis that is affecting the territory. The meeting saw the participation of representatives of the Prefectures of Potenza and Matera, the Regional Civil Protection, the ASM and ASP health companies, the Lucanian Aqueduct, the Land Reclamation Consortium and the Lucanian health companies. Furthermore, Acque del Sud Spa and the District Basin Authority were involved.

The aim of the meeting was to take stock of the current situation and evaluate the possibility of requesting a regional state of emergency for civil protection, similar to what has already been done in Sicily and Calabria. Declaring a state of emergency would allow for more incisive measures to be implemented to address the water crisis.

During the meeting, a comprehensive picture of the difficulties related to the supply of water for civil use was presented. Although some problems have been resolved quickly, the medium and long-term weather forecasts and the data on the reservoir water resource are not positive.

The drought affecting the Lucanian territory requires a detailed and motivated request for the National Department of Civil Protection to declare a state of emergency. The hope is that the process, also shared with the regional Prefectures, will be short. An appeal has been made to the Observatory of the Basin Authority to urgently evaluate the data provided for the declaration of water severity.
