Feverish work at the gigantic construction site for the Pope’s visit to Trieste

TRIESTE, 02 JULY – Work is underway at a feverish pace in Piazza Unità d’Italia in preparation for the visit of Pope Francis. The gigantic stage that was quickly built is almost complete, 60 meters wide by 14 meters high and surrounded by six tall towers. Every day at least ten workers are at work, wearing helmets and harnesses, climbing the metal structure of innocent pipes and numerous means are used. There are approximately eight thousand seats that will be set up in the square and they are all already assigned, from which it will be possible to follow the mass celebrated by the Pope and the Angelus. The construction site is set up on the side of the square in front of the Town Hall and along the perimeter is covered with panels with the words “50th Catholic Social Week”, “At the Heart of Democracy” which is the title given to the works and “I am Friuli Venezia Giulia” which is the promotional slogan of the Fvg region. The 50th Catholic Social Week will be inaugurated tomorrow, July 3, with a visit from the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, and will be closed by the Pope on Sunday, July 7.
