It seemed like a simple accident, a collision between a motorbike and a car at low speed, but for Roberto Grasso it was fatal. A life spent for flying and for his family, an Air Force officer now serving in Rome at the General Staff, but every evening he returned to his Priverno. He commuted so as not to leave the town where he was born.

The community of Priverno is shrouded in painful mourning for his premature death, he was 57 years old and was highly respected and well-known, many remember that familiar and smiling face. The accident occurred on Friday in Viterbo where he had participated in a motorcycle rally.

According to initial reconstructions, a 90-year-old man, driving a car, hit Grasso’s motorbike, who was riding with other motorcyclist friends along the Cassia, in Acquapendente. The 57-year-old lost control of his motorbike and crashed into the car. The collision was not extremely violent, yet a wound to the neck was fatal for the officer. Rescue was immediate, the 118 staff stabilized the injured man and then arranged for him to be transported to the Belcolle hospital. Despite the doctors’ desperate efforts, the man died shortly after the accident.

Roberto Grasso was a man known and appreciated by all not only for his courtesy and his altruistic spirit, but also for his great passion for flying. An Air Force officer, Grasso stood out for his courage and professionalism, qualities that earned him the prestigious Silver Medal of Aeronautical Valor in 2013. Honor awarded to him for the value demonstrated during a mission to recover injured people in Afghanistan in 2009, when, as helicopter crew chief pilot, he completed the mission with competence and courage, operating in conditions of extreme danger and operational difficulty .

The reasons for the medal read: “He completed the assigned mission with competence and courage, in conditions of danger and extreme operational difficulty, saving the lives of the personnel involved and bringing his crew back to base unharmed.” There are numerous testimonies of affection and esteem towards Roberto Grasso. A friend remembers him like this: «He was a man with a heart of gold, always ready to help others. His passing leaves an unfillable void in all of us.” The entire community of Priverno rallies around Roberto Grasso’s family.
