CATANIA – The head of the Milanese Cursoti was also there, among the clients of the Calabrian drug traffickers arrested last week in the Devozione blitz, which brought 13 people to prison. Among the investigation papers, the name of Carmelo Distefano emerges, until August 2020 believed to be the leader of the clan, committed to regaining control of the drug dealing squares of San Berillo Nuovo.

Distefano was involved in the shooting in August 2020 of viale Grimaldi where two people died. Among the reasons for the firefight there was also the control of drug dealing in some drug dealing areas, over which Distefano wanted to gain a monopoly.

The square of viale Grimaldi

Distefano’s relationship with Bruno Cidoniindicated as one of the Catania wholesalers of cocaine coming from Calabria in the summer of 2020, is told by Martino Carmelo Sanfilippo, who managed the square in Viale Grimaldi and who after the Librino shooting began to collaborate with justice.

“In Viale Grimaldi 18 I ran a drug dealing place together with my brothers Ninni and Michael – Sanfilippo says in a report – the square dealt in cocaine, the dealing activity took place at home. The average quantity sold was around 100 grams per week. We had placed video cameras outside the building to monitor any interventions by the police.”

In the reports, Sanfilippo recognizes Bruno Cidoni as one of the men from whom he bought cocaine in San Giovanni Galermoand says he always went with Carmelo Distefano: “He put the money for the narcotic – says Sanfilippo – he bought it at around 36 thousand euros per kilo and supplied it to me at 40 thousand per kilo”.

Distefano gave Sanfilippo approximately 10-150 grams of cocaine per week. The collaborator of justice says he does not know to whom Distefano gave the other cocaine that he bought from the Calabrians. Sanfilippo also says he bought drugs from the Calabrians both with Distefano and alone, specifying: “Even when I went alone I moved on behalf of Distefano”.

The shooting and the breakdown of relations

Cocaine in Viale Grimaldi, security cameras, drug dealing control and Sanfilippo’s role these are all elements that re-emerge precisely in the shooting of 8 August 2020. The Cappello fire group reached the Cursoti in Viale Grimaldi precisely because they knew that there was one of the strongholds of Distefano and his circle.

On the 5th of August, three days before the shootingDistefano is recorded by the cameras that the Flying Squad placed in front of the house of Bruno Cidoni, who together with Antonio Pezzano is considered the head of the organization that sold cocaine wholesale in Catania to a large part of the Etna criminal world.

Distefano is recorded entering Cidoni’s house together with Martino Carmelo Sanfilippo. After an hour both Distefano and Sanfilippo leave with a brown envelope that they didn’t have when they arrived.

The collaboration between Distefano and the Calabrians Bruno Cidoni and Antonio Pezzano it was interrupted following the shooting on August 8th. After that episode Distefano returns to prison. In the investigations into the raid, Devozione is under investigation for a single episode of cocaine supply.
