ROME, JUNE 08 – “One of us has gone, a brother, a member of our community, and when one of the community leaves, the others rally together and support each other”. This was the emotional greeting of Mayor Emanuele Maggi this morning at the funeral of Giorgio Calcagni, the 40-year-old who died last Tuesday in Vico Matrino following an accident in which an excavator crushed him. “There is no explanation for this tragedy – continued Maggi – But look at what Giorgio did today. He united two countries, two communities, he brought together many people and what we are called to do, in this moment of extreme pain, is a reflection on life. Which sometimes seems like everything to us, and it is, but in a moment it is also nothing. We must have the strength to abandon the small daily things that divide us, to create community and be together, in a big embrace.” The funeral officiated by Don Vianey Sanchez Perez was held at 11 am in the church of S. Maria Assunta in Cielo, in Bassano Romano, in the province of Viterbo. “A good, cheerful man, this was Giorgio – said Don Vianey in his homily – even if there is apparently no explanation for this tragedy, we are certain that the lord in his infinite goodness wanted him next to him, and also if he is not physically with us, he will continue to share our lives.” When the coffin left the church, the applause of friends and relatives and a launch of colored balloons greeted it. Meanwhile, the police are continuing their investigations to clarify the dynamics of the accident that caused Calcagni’s death.
