Albinea Jazz returns with two super concerts at Villa Arnò

The 2024 edition of the prestigious Albinea Jazz music festival will restart with two big names, which this year will reach the milestone of 37 candles. The event will consist of two large concerts in the park of the splendid Villa Arnò on 17 and 18 July.

Organized and conceived by the Municipality of Albinea and the artistic director Vilmo Delrio, in collaboration with the Emilia Romagna Region, the festival aims to spread knowledge of jazz, as fascinating as it is sometimes controversial and elusive, and at the same time to enhance some historic buildings and buildings of artistic interest in the municipal area.

This meeting between art and music, combined with a look at the local and national reality, and the talent of internationally renowned musicians, make Albinea Jazz a musical moment of great prestige and high quality.

Also this year Albinea Jazz has decided to support the activity of Apro Onlus of Reggio Emilia, Association for the study and treatment of diseases of the digestive system – radiotherapy projects. During the Festival it will be possible to learn about its activities.

The first of the two concerts will be Wednesday 17 July, at 9.30 pm will have as protagonists Richard Bona & Alfredo Rodriguez Trio. The band is made up of Alfredo Rodríguez (piano and vocals)

Richard Bona (bass and vocals) and Michael Olivera (drums).

RICHARD BONA & ALFREDO RODRIGUEZ TRIO

They seemed to have little in common: one from Cameroon, the other from Cuba, with almost twenty years of age difference. Yet the proverbial journey from the musical ‘south of the world’ to the heart of the American scene brought them together, causing magic to strike. Which isn’t even strange after all: taken individually, they are both magicians of rhythm; together they redefine the limits of sound propulsion. Born in Cameroon in 1967 into a family of musicians, Richard Bona began practicing instrumental music as a child. At the age of 22 he moved to Europe to study, finally arriving in the United States in 1995. His first solo album arrived in 1999 but previously he was musical director for Harry Belafonte. Shortly thereafter he toured the world with the Pat Metheny Group and the Joe Zawinul Syndacate. Since then he has been one of the most sought-after bassists at the top of jazz and beyond, as demonstrated by the Grammy awards he has won during his exceptional career. In 2006 the Montreux festival brought Alfredo Rodríguez’s talent to international attention: also to Quincy Jones, who heard him in a private audition on that occasion. From that moment on, the Cuban pianist’s career took off, resulting in this prestigious musical partnership with Richard Bona.

The second concert will be Thursday 18 July, again at 9.30 pm. On this occasion they will perform on the stage of Villa Arnò I Something Else!, band composed of Vincent Herring (alto sax), Wayne Escoffery (tenor sax), Jeremy Pelt (trumpet), Paul Bollenback (guitar), David Kikoski (piano), Essiet (double bass) e Lewis Nash (drums).

SOMETHING ELSE!

Something Else! it is a true celebration of the genre that went down in history as soul jazz. The band plays new and modern arrangements of classics from the 50s and 60s (pieces by masters such as Horace Silver, Les McCann, Freddie Hubbard, Eddie Harris) and original compositions written in the same style. They are all masters of their instruments and authoritative interpreters of hard bop with strong blues undertones: a jazz that has its roots in tradition but is immersed in contemporaneity. As band leader Vincent Herring says, “the best musicians playing great music and enjoying it to the hilt, which becomes contagious.” Vincent Herring can boast a glorious career: he played his saxophone in the bands of Horace Silver, Cedar Walton, Dizzy Gillespie, Freddy Hubbard, as well as in Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. He was also in the Mingus Big Band (with which he won a Grammy), with Carla Bley, with Wynton Marsalis for Jazz At Lincoln Center. Herring made his first tour with Lionel Hampton’s big band, where Nat Adderley noticed him, impressed by how much Vincent was inspired by his brother Cannonball. Their partnership lasted nine years and produced as many records and world tours. Something Else’s debut album! is expected in 2024.
