A device that would allow truck drivers to reach a speed of 130 km/h, forty above the safety limit required by law. The agents of the Road Transport Control section of the Local Police of Trento discovered it. The electronic device is capable of altering the correct functioning of the speed limiter of heavy vehicles and has been found on free sale throughout Europe. According to what was found by the officers, the installation of the device allows the driver to drive the heavy vehicle at a speed of 130 km/h, extremely dangerous for road safety. For heavy vehicles (trucks), the installation and use of a speed limiter that does not allow exceeding 90 km/h is mandatory at European level.
The deputy superintendent Alessandro Zampedri, an expert in fighting this type of fraud, realized that the device prevents the system that manages the speed limitation from intervening on the engine control unit. Therefore, if fitted, when the maximum speed is exceeded, the engine does not receive the information to stop accelerating, allowing the vehicle to reach a dangerous speed. The Local Police warns drivers and road haulage companies against using these electronic devices, as the penalties foreseen reach up to a maximum of 7,734 euros with the additional sanction of revocation of the driving licence.
