“Total or partial liberation from a state of suffering or physical or moral discomfort”. This is the definition of the word relief: a key concept on which the system of palliative care and medicine in general is based. The XXIII National Relief Day is dedicated to relief and everything that revolves around this concept, which in 2024 falls on May 26th. On the occasion of the anniversary this morning in the Auditorium of the new wing of the Misericordia Hospital in Grosseto a conference was held entitled “The protection of the end-of-life path: palliative care, a possible choice. How to make law 219 of 2017 alive”, organized by the Palliative Care Functional Unit, directed by Dr. Anna Paola Pecci (photo). “When there is nothing left to do… there is always a lot to do: we can cure – explains doctor Anna Paola Pecci -. Every year we celebrate this day with the aim of raising awareness and making known the role and importance of Palliative Care, a discipline of medicine that is still little known especially by users and which has a modus operandi that is rooted in respect for the dignity of the person. During the conference, experiences of life in Hospice were presented, as well as testimonies of operators and patients reported by nursing degree students who chose to learn from the Hospice what “taking care” means in the name of respect for life. Not only that: the latest updates on complementary therapies, relaxation techniques, pet therapy and everything that falls within the profile of Palliative care were examined where the truly patient, his life, his choices, are at the center of a path in which cultivating awareness of death means developing awareness of life, that is, truly living.” This morning’s conference was conceived and organized by the Order of Doctors and Dentists of the province of Grosseto, in collaboration with the UF Palliative Care Amiata Grossetana, Grossetana, Colline metallifere, an ECM training event for doctors.
