the 1.5 million euro redevelopment project of the ‘Southern Corridor’

The Municipality of Reggio Calabria presented a new and ambitious intervention plan For improve mobility in the city. This project mainly focuses on the redevelopment of the “South corridor” and the strengthening of “interchange node in the CE.DIR area“, aimed at making the local public transport system (TPL) more efficient and attractive compared to the use of private cars.

Redevelopment of the “Southern Corridor”

The redevelopment of the “Southern Corridor” (Lot 1) concerns the embankment streets along the Calopinace stream, the so-called “braces”, which connect the motorway access to the city with the Reggio Calabria Centrale railway station. The planned interventions aim to increase the commercial speed of LPT, making it a more attractive and sustainable choice. The key actions to be implemented for the success of the plan are the following:

  • reserved and protected lanes: creation of lanes reserved for public transport and protected lanes to improve the fluidity of public transport;
  • traffic light priority: implementation of intelligent traffic lights with traffic light priority, turning green when public transport arrives;
  • traffic regulation systems: introduction of traffic calming systems to reduce the speed of private vehicles and increase road safety;
  • integration with other means of transport: encourage the use of alternative travel modes such as cycling and walking, and improve north-south transversal connections.

A budget of 1,500,000.00 euros. The interventions should be completed by 31 December 2026.

Strengthening of the CE.DIR Zone

The Municipality’s plan also includes the strengthening of the interchange hub in the CE.DIR area, integrating a new car park to the east under the viaduct through the extension of the road axis of Via del Gelsomino. This enhancement will help decongest urban traffic and improve accessibility to the main attractions of the city.

These interventions are integrated with the REGIA project (Ecological Regeneration of Large Environmental Interventions), which aims to functionally improve the infrastructure, increasing the safety of travel and the environmental and landscape quality of the context concerned.

The aim of the municipal administration is to give priority to local public transport, increasing its commercial speed and thus making it more efficient. Another objective is to “mend the territory”, improving accessibility and connection with the Morelli hospital complex and other key points of the city.

The redevelopment of South corridor and the strengthening of the CE.DIR interchange nodeif they were to become reality, would allow us to transform the urban transport system, improving the quality of life of citizens and promoting urban growth.
