Moments of panic at the Monza prison in via Sanquirico. A young inmate set the fire: the readiness of the officers was decisive

On Thursday 23 April, at the prison in via Sanquirico in Monza, a prisoner of North African nationality he started a fire inside his cell and, within seconds, it triggered panic throughout the facility. The flames broke out immediately and the promptness of the officers was crucial, as they immediately secured 25 inmates, saving their lives.

At the moment it is not known what the reason was that led the prisoner to carry out this gesture even if, according to those investigating, the intention was only to create a bit of a stir. The structure, which among other things also houses several fragile subjects, was invaded by flames in a very short time: this is the decisive action of the penitentiary officers.

The intervention of the agents

Within a few minutes, the entire wing where the fire was started filled with smoke caused by the burning of the mattress and other objects inside the cell of the man who started it all. The intervention of the staff is fundamental and, with one “strong sense of duty” and “high professionalism”as the Penitentiary Police say, he actually saved the lives of 25 inmatescompletely surrounded by smoke and therefore unable to breathe.

The officers, given the seriousness of the situation, initially tried to use a fire extinguisher but this proved completely useless, so they resorted to the fire hydrant. Meanwhile, some colleagues they evacuated all the inmates to the courtyard walk and, among them, the person responsible for the fire was also brought to safety.

Congratulations to the staff

Secretary General Osapp Leo Beneduci congratulated the prison staff, underlining how well the staff fared well beyond institutional tasks of the Penitentiary Police Corps, highlighted how all the officers who intervened had an incredible spirit of self-sacrifice. Beneduci also underlined that in this case no one ended up in hospital thanks to the rapidity of the officers’ intervention, behavior which he hopes will be an example for all prisons in Italy in situations of need.
