cyclist loses suitcase and bomb threat goes off

BRINDISI – Territorial controls strengthened in view of the G7 scheduled in Savelletri (Fasano) from 13 to 15 June. Control posts in the city and province and maximum alert by the police. This is how a suitcase falling from a bicycle triggered a bomb threat in Brindisi. It happened in the early afternoon today, Friday 24 May: someone noticed an unattended suitcase on the ground at the intersection of Via Indipendenza and the De Gasperi overpass and immediately called the police. As per protocol, the bomb alarm was triggered: the overpass was closed to traffic and the bomb squad went to the scene. Within an hour, however, the situation returned to normal. Many wondered what was happening, photos of police on site made the rounds on social media from Facebook to Whatsapp. As already mentioned, it was luggage lost by a cyclist.

A few evenings ago, precisely Monday 20 May, the same thing happened near the Morvillo-Falcone school in Brindisi: a suitcase on the pavement triggered the bomb alarm in via Galanti. Someone contacted the police, reporting the presence of an abandoned baggage in front of the long-distance bus stop. Even in that case, the road was closed and bomb squads were on site. The luggage containing clothes had most likely been forgotten by some traveller. The alert remains high.

It should also be remembered that the Italian Government has chosen Brindisi as the venue for the first dinner, which will be held on 13 June in the Castello Svevo of Brindisi and in which the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella will participate.
