At the center of the electoral meeting, the Bridge over the Strait of Messina and the environmental issue. “It is a pharaonic, colonial and unachievable work – Leoluca Orlando already expressed during his electoral campaign -, which only serves to enrich some complacent politicians. Over 200 observations from ministry technicians say that it cannot be done. It is a damage to the social and human environment. It is located in a notoriously seismic area and thousands of people risk being deported and deprived of their homes. With 14.8 billion euros, railways, roads and schools could be built.”

“Yes to a national park

And again: “The bridge over the Strait is in conflict with the EU criteria of the Green Deal, with the UN sustainable development objectives, with the European directive on procurement, that on habitat and birds, with enormous damage on the impact environmental. The entire area of the Strait of Messina should be protected by establishing a National Park of the Strait and the Costa Viola, as proposed by Angelo Bonelli in 2023. In doing so, we should rethink the maritime transport of the Strait, faster and more sustainable, with new propelled ferries electric or green methane which also reduce the crossing time. With the huge sums of the Pnrr, the port areas, near the landing places, should be equipped with solar systems for green mobility. Sicily has a serious problem with drought and desertification. There is tropicalization underway. We need to invest in water pipes, reservoirs and the circular economy.”
