Friday, in Caserta, conference on differentiated autonomy and more. An event not to be missed

Caserta – (pm) Next Friday 24 May, the city will discuss differentiated autonomy and not only, as stated in the poster announcing the initiative. The meeting is scheduled for 6pm in the street S. Antida, 4, headquarters of the city’s political movement Caserta Decideswhich represents the councilor in the municipal council Raffaele Giovine.

The opportunity will be offered by the presentation of the book Vacuum to lose of the journalist and essayist Marco Esposito (in the photo alongside), with a political past first as head of the Policies for Southern Italy departmental section of Italia dei Valori and subsequently in the De Magistris council of the Municipality of Naples as councilor for productive activities.

The criminal lawyer will moderate the proceedings Antonello Fabrocile (in the photo below), also already involved in active Caserta politics having held the position of municipal councilor elected on the civic list in 2016 Hope for Caserta.

As we know, the issue of differentiated regional autonomy is enormous due to its complexity, its implications and its historical significance which could overturn the structure of the country.

So much so that there have been numerous initiatives, especially from the South, in dissent from the bill presented to parliament to introduce it and under discussion. Among the most active and well-known opponents there are certainly the professor Massimo Villoneconstitutionalist and former parliamentarian, e Giancarlo Viestiprofessor of applied economics at the University of Bariwhich explicitly talks about one secession of the rich.

In particular, Villone promoted, through the Coordination Committee for Constitutional Democracy and with the help of trade union forces, a proposed constitutional law of popular initiative to correct the hypothesized regional reform. The proposal collected more than double the 50 thousand signatures needed and was presented to the Senate on June 1 last year.

Even the municipal council of Caserta, even without the opposition’s vote, expressed itself, like many territorial bodies in the South, unfavorably through its own motion.

Nonetheless, the legislative initiative proceeds without any particular repercussions in its parliamentary process. Approved in the Council of Ministers in February 2023, assigned to the chamber for discussion, the bill for the implementation of differentiated autonomy on January 24th it was sent to the Senate for the second reading. Since yesterday, May 21st, the calendar for the discussion with votes has been set. We are therefore at the final goal, to the point that many believe that the only possible remedy for the approval given as certain will be the use of a popular referendum to repeal the regulatory text.

A survey of Demopolis for the Foundation with the South made known in these hours reveals that 81% of citizens of the South say no to differentiated autonomy because it would only favor the rich regions.

Yet, judging by the lack of participation in every initiative, demonstration or debate on the issue, it seems that it is not of much interest. President DeLuca speaks with hyperbole of the South that sleeps standing instead of fighting.

Let us hope that Friday’s conference can bring some element of clarity.
