From paradox to utopia (possible): prison as a place of culture’ and the lectio magistralis That Ilaria Cucchi held in Pesaro Friday 24 May as part of ‘Capital Encounters’ (Palazzo Gradari, at 6.00 pm).

Senator, vice-president of the Justice Commission and human rights activist, Cucchi will address the prison problems also starting from the sad news events of recent years. In particular, it will reflect on how penitentiary facilities have become, too often, ‘not places’ where it is becoming increasingly difficult to work to encourage the prisoner’s integration into society. A situation linked to the paradoxes by which penal institutions are affected: compared to an increase in the prison population, the support services provided by the State decrease, the centrality of the role of prisons in political propaganda corresponds to a great distance, which is equally political and also social, compared to the life of our cities. There lectio will delve into the importance of recover the educational role of the penitentiary institutionor with a view to a new approach that allows us to reconstruct a possible and necessary utopia.

After the death of her brother Stefano in 2009, a few days after the arrest and while he was subjected to precautionary custody, Ilaria Cucchi undertook a very long legal battle: “I went back and forth from the courtrooms for thirteen years. Not only for Stefano and not only for the last ones, but so that the honor of the institutions in which I have never stopped believing was re-established”. Today his commitment to the rights of prisoners is very strong and to ensuring that those institutions are able to take care of everyone, starting with those who need it most.

For ‘Capital Encounters’, two new events on the calendar are worth mentioning: Monday 27 May Goffredo Bettini will present his book “Crossings. Stories and meetings of an Italian communist and democrat” (PaperFIRST) in dialogue with the mayor of Pesaro Matteo Ricci and with the parliamentarian Claudio Mancini (Pesaro, Palazzo Gradari – 6.30 pm); Friday 31 May (5.30 pm – Palazzo Gradari) he will be a guest in Pesaro Jacopo Fo with her lectio magistralis entitled ‘The Science of Jesters’.

The initiative is promoted by Pesaro Italian Capital of Culture in collaboration with Passaggi Cultura. Entrance to the meetings it is free and without reservation. Full program and updates on Pesaro2024.it
