The House of Divine Providence in Sassari closes.
The last patient of the facility was taken away last Friday and now the institute, founded by Father Manzella, is empty. Except for the ten cats who remained inside and now have no one to care for them anymore. Because the structure is inaccessible even to workers.
“There are padlocks everywhere and they have changed the locks – the employees report – and you can’t enter to give them food and drink.”
The cats had been adopted by the community of the facility and represented a diversion for the elderly: “They were essential company.”
It is a sad ending for the hospice, which came after years of economic hardship and, finally, the declaration of bankruptcy sanctioned by the court at the end of 2023. Then the appointment of the bankruptcy trustee and the progressive exodus of the approximately 40 guests, several of whom are were transferred to Casa Serena, while others found hospitality in similar structures or at relatives’ homes.
But now the fate of the 17 employees remains in doubt, who were the guardians of those elderly people for years in very complex conditions. “We haven’t received salaries for three months – they declare – And now we are in the hands of Aspal which will have to decide on collective dismissal”.
All in general silence after the media attention of recent months, as if the House, and its inhabitants, had never existed.
