The Sant’Antonio Abate hospital in Trapani has been identified by the Regional Health Department, with a specific decree, as a health facility in possession of the technical-professional and organizational requirements for the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of celiac disease, also recognizing it , a position of pre-eminence as a Hub Centre, with the doctor Marcello Palmeri as contact person.

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease linked to a permanent food intolerance towards gluten. There are around 450 celiacs diagnosed in the province of Trapani, but the actual number, taking into account the asymptomatic ones, is more conspicuous and, in any case, constantly increasing.

The activity of the hospital’s Hub Center is structured as follows: gastroenterological examination for adults and children; initial diagnosis; filling out the diagnostic confirmation and illness certification form; follow-up (periodic check-up visit to follow the course of the disease and verify the effectiveness of therapies, even if the essential one consists in the rigorous elimination of gluten from the diet) of celiac patients, adults and children; food education; psychological support; screening of first-degree relatives and other at-risk patients.

The outpatient activity service takes place every Tuesday from 8.30am to 10am for blood tests and from 3pm to 6pm for visits and certifications. Access is regulated through booking at a Cup desk, with a specific request from the family doctor or pediatrician of free choice for “suspected celiac disease or celiac disease follow-up”.
