Minister Schillaci: «We don’t want to dismantle healthcare, soon decree for waiting lists»

«I certainly found a complex, not easy, patchy situation, with many lights and many shadows, but the Italian national health system still represents today, despite some describing it as now on the verge of collapse, a health system of excellence, thanks above all to the great quality of the healthcare workers.” Thus begins the Minister of Health, Orazio Schillaci, speaking at the event «Why the National Health Service must be defended» organized as part of the Trento Festival of Economics. «There is no doubt that the Italian national health system is still a point of reference today – he continues – And for this reason I believe it must absolutely be defended and improved. It is clear that after many years of neglect and inattention, we need to intervene in a serious, homogeneous, modern way, because the world has changed, healthcare has changed, but no one wants to dismantle the national health service or go towards the private sector.”

For the minister it is necessary to intervene on the allocation of funds. «If we look at the Nadef 2022 of the government that preceded us, the trend was 2 billion per year, last year we put 3 billion and a forecast for next year of 4 billion», he adds. Regarding healthcare personnel, «we are working to remove the spending cap and abolish it – he continues – We have been working on this with the Mef for almost two years, it is clear that the Mef is always worried about public finances. Today the world has changed: we have a blocked turnover, with many young doctors who are unable to enter the public sector.”

Regarding waiting lists, «It’s a problem that needs to be addressed in an organic way and I’ve put my face to it. I could have said that the regions will take care of it, but I put my face to it – he continues -. I’m thinking of a platform made up of regions that gives us real-time performance. It’s the first point I want to make. I would like to put together the performances of the public and accredited private sector in the cups. I am convinced that by putting together the agendas, waiting times will decrease. But booking diaries should not be closed, it is illegitimate.”
