OSTEOPOROSIS AND BONE FRAGILITY

In Italy these two pathologies constitute an important health and social problem, destined to further grow as a result of thepopulation aging: osteoporosis, in particular, is a silent pathology that progresses over the years until clinical manifestation.

Over the course of a lifetime, approx 40 percent of the population suffers a hip fracture, of the vertebra or wrist, in most cases after the age of 65. It is estimated that osteoporosis affects around five million people in Italy, of which 80 percent are post-menopausal women: among other things, fragility fractures have a high cost from a health and social point of view.

During the evening, various topics will be covered, starting with fractures which constitute the most serious complication of osteoporosis given that they can cause permanent disability and, especially in older and more compromised people, reduce survival.
