Vingegaard at the Giro, agreement with RCS on the way: the Dane will be the big favourite

All that is missing now is the official participation of Jonas Vingegaard at the Giro d’Italia 2026. Second Markthe Visma-Lease a Bike climber would have reached an economic agreement with RCS Sport, a sort of extra salary reserved for the big names, to be at the start of the Pink race in Bulgaria on May 8th. “The final decision will be made known in the coming weeks, but the leader of Visma has expressed his desire to win the Giro d’Italia and the conditions have already been defined and accepted by the parties”.

Pogacar and the dream of winning the Giro, Tour and Vuelta in the same season: “It can be done”. The precedents

Never at the Giro

Vingegaard has never participated in the Giro d’Italia: in his best years he has always been focused on the Tour de France (2 victories in 2022 and 2023 and three second places in 2021 and in 2024 and 2025, always ahead of or behind Pogacar), with two nevertheless fruitful diversions: the 2023 Vuelta (2nd place) and the 2025 Vuelta, which he won. With two major stage races won out of three, Vingegaard therefore needs the Giro to close the triple crown: if he were to succeed, it would be the eighth ever since Anquetil, Gimondi, Merckx, Hinault, Contador, Nibali and Froome. Curiously, Gimondi also obtained the triple crown before his immense alter-ego, Eddy Merckx: Felice achieved it in 1968, the Cannibal only in 1973. For Vingegaard, towards Pogacar, a similar situation would therefore arise again. Obviously the Dane will also be at the start of the Tour de France, where he would meet Pogi, who instead should move to the Tour-Vuelta double in 2026. At the Giro Vingegaard will find the Portuguese Joao Almeida as his main opponent.
