The snow is loved by almost everyone but certainly less loved by those who are in the car and find themselves in the middle of a snowfall. Snow causes queues and slowdowns and can also lead to accidents due to loss of grip.
He knows it well Japan who has been using a quantum method for years simple yet brilliantto keep the streets clean whenever it snows. After seeing the historic decision regarding drift, we return to talking about Japan on our pages and this time we want to focus on the so-called “shosetsu” which is precisely the system devised by our Japanese friends to avoid post-snow chaos.
Even if there are those who decide to use their Ferrari F40 in the snow, the majority of motorists are not capable of driving in these complex weather conditions, consequently the authorities intervene with the classic snow blowers, to try to clean the road surface of accumulations as quickly as possible.
On the Asian island, however, things work differently and the shosetsu method has even been introduced in the 60s. Along the streets of the city of Nagaoka some have been installed sprinklers under the road surface which are activated precisely when it snows. They work with water collected from the rain and when they come into operation they wet the asphalt with it of warmer water compared to the snow, melting the white blanket. From Nagaoka the experimentation has spread to many other areas and now all of Japan is covered from this ingenious system.
The peculiarity of this method is that it works with the thermal springs which are scattered throughout the country, combined with rainwater, given that spraying cold water would only complicate things, risking creating dangerous ice floes.
Why Isn’t this system replicated in other countries? The question is legitimate and the answer is to be found precisely in the aforementioned thermal springs which obviously are not everywhere. However, alternatives could be found, pumping heated hot water into the pipes, then spraying it on the road: it would certainly be a more expensive system from a monetary and energy point of view but in any case it would solve the problem in a very simple way, thus compensating for the costs of snow plows and so on.
