SPID, after the farewell in Italy the European one will arrive: what will it be used for?

To guarantee a reliable and unique digital identity, the rules for the SPID will soon change, replaced by a European one.

The acronym SPID stands for Public Digital Identity System. It is therefore a digital identifier composed of a username and a password that allows users to access all the portals of the Public Administration in Italy. However, a European regulation on digital identity was also recently developed: a real novelty in the digital transformation of our society.

The SPID service was launched in March 2016. The objective was to simplify and improve the relationship between citizens and bureaucracy, making digital services easier, safer and faster to use. The new European regulation on digital identity helps to significantly improve access to online public services across Europe.

One aspect that it alleviates bureaucratic complexities to which every citizen must submit. It is a way to allow citizens to have a digital identity valid throughout the EU, unique and safe. On the other hand, it will be an absolute point of reference in the digital field, thanks to its positive impact on the use of online services.

Main elements of the revised regulation of the European Spid

According to the new directives, the European regulation will soon be published in the Official Journal of the EU. It is expected in a few weeks and, following publication, it is assumed that within 20 days of publication it will be implemented. However, we will have to wait until 2026 to officially use the digital service.

The objective of the European Commission is to provide all natural and non-natural persons with the opportunity to have a reliable and efficient universal electronic service. The new guidelines state that the member states will offer citizens and businesses a digital service to be associated with the national one.

Obviously, the connection must be proven with proof of other personal credentials (e.g driving license driving and I count banking). In this way, citizens will be able to demonstrate theirs identity and take advantage of it simply by connecting from your smartphone.

Once you have created your account there will be no need to use other login credentials. In this regard, the various European institutions have discussed strengthening the legislation and have declared that it is a service that has the objective of improving the safety and effectiveness of the system. Therefore, this is a step forward towards a digital world that puts people first European citizens and their security all in all online world.
