At almost a decade from the first signs of existence in the form of a demo. Meanwhile, the mysterious Necromantic Worship – Dutch project devoted Soul and Body to a certain Occult / Black necromantic worship – necromantic worship Metal of the very early nineties – return with their first album of the same name. Furthermore, A return that knows of a ritual manifestation. In addition, a descent into an abyss that seems to have come out directly from an old uni -randy catalog, full of dust, incense and infernal reverbs.
The distinctive feature of the band. Nevertheless, evident from the beginning, is brought here to maturing without losing a gram of that fundamentalist vision and its romantic way: a philological tribute to the darkest pioneers of a certain European scene. For example, “Necromantic Worship” is based on an unusual sound structure for modern standards: the lower sovereign. Consequently, dense and mosquito reigns, so much so as to almost completely replace guitars in providing the skeleton of the compositions. However, This is not just a stylistic choice. but a manifesto of intent: bring back to life the ethos of the necromantic worship – necromantic worship first necromantia, without however limiting itself to too sterile imitation.
The guitars peek only for Assoli. often melodic and well chiseled, which add a lyrical contrast to the turbid of the low-end. The result is a smoky and viscous sound, in some ways minimalist, but never without direction. On this Plumbeo backdrop. retro keyboards stand out, with a homemade stamp and vaguely kitsch, which effectively recall the sense of the wonderful and macabre of the first Samael and the most evocative mortuary drapes. Their apparently naive use is instead an integral part of the construction of a deliberately dated aesthetic. theatrical, esoteric and also Gothic.
The voice of Ghûllzaraën – name that seems to have come out of a forgotten lunch – adds an additional level of estrangement: rather than singing. narrates and hiss, like an ogre convened by a ritual, proceeding for evocative fragments, set in songs that often seem small necromantic worship – necromantic worship dark stories. In short. the fury of a destructive and highly locked black metal is not seen, but a more composed ceremonial, sometimes hypnotic, which aims to build dense and arcane settings.
The revival Old School has experienced an almost bulimic abundance in recent years. but the Necromantic Worships are placed in an even more narrow niche: not so much in the most famous norwegian direction or in the Swedish black-death one, but in the dark Mediterranean current of the nineties, see the first Varathron, the aforementioned necromantia, the Samaael of the Mortuary drape. Their cult is specific, wanted, and deliberately unrelated to contemporary fashions.
“Necromantic Worship” is in short as a job for a few. But precisely in his awareness, in his devoted adherence to a lost aesthetic, he finds his strength. It is an album that does not seek compromises. but that can offer something to those who still get necromantic worship – necromantic worship excited in front of a dated synth, to a melodic solo that pierces the fog, to a voice that tells stories of ancient rituals. A tribute, yes, but well managed and interpreted by a line-up of real lovers.
