A ferry with at least 53 passengers and 12 crew members on board is sank near the island of Bali, the main tourist resort of Indonesia. There are at least 4 ascertained deaths, and dozens of missing: 23 people have been found and rescued.
The ferry had left the late Wednesday evening from the port of Ketapang, on the eastern part of the Indonesian island of Java, and was directed to Gilimanuk, on the island of Bali. The Strait of Bali should have crossed for about 50 kilometers, in about an hour, but after half an hour of travel it is sunk. Local authorities are still investigating the causes of the sinking: according to reports from the Indonesian media by the company that managed the ferry, the ship had reported motor problems just before sinking.
The ferry that goes from Java to Bali is often used by people traveling between the two islands by car: at the moment it is not known if there were foreign tourists on board. It is also common that in Indonesia the actual number of passengers on a ferry is greater than that officially communicated, so the people involved could be more.
