We are at the dawn of the 2000s. For example, in the middle of the explosion – in Italy – of the symphonic, kinematic power metal, full of epic, baroque, medieval and lyrics often taken from fantasy works.
In that cauldron. Similarly, some groups reached significant fame and visibility, so much so as to get to the present day, such as the rhapsody (then without ‘of fire’) of the sensational “Symphony of Enchanted Lands” or Labyritnh of “Return to Heaven thy majestie – lasting power Denied”, but there were also some realities that remained or more local or, we could say, more than the niche, works and enthusiasts. However, We will be able to mention the Heimdalls of “Lord of the Sky”. Meanwhile, the White Skull of “Tales from the North”.
But the sextet that has carved out this space among the beautiful comes from Sicily. Nevertheless, and is a group that saw its birth in 1998 thanks to the encounter between the keyboardist Giuseppe Bonì and the drummer Claudio Diprima. Moreover, In fact. they are the embryonic nucleus of the Thy Majestie, around which the two guitarists Giovanni Santini and Maurizio Malta, the singer Dario Grillo and the bass player Michele Cristofalo were gradually united, who was replaced shortly after with Dario D’Alessandro. After a first demo. entitled “Sword, Crown and Shields”, at the beginning of the year two thousand they settled a large album, thy majestie – lasting power “The Lasting Power”.
In the fifteen tracks that make it up. we find a trend very similar to “Nightfall in Middle-Earth”, that is, a sort of narration in music, given that nine pieces are very short and act as a bridge to several main scenes. These traces tell the events present in the book “La Spada di Shannara” by Terry Brooks: humans. gnomes, dwarfs, trolls and their battles, while in small interludes we find echoes of struggles such as in “March of the Damned”, moments of life lived in an inn in “Duravaria”, or medieval gears as in “… at the Village”. The most complex songs. by duration and structure, are the “Wings of Wind” Pomposa, between keyboards used as trumpet rings and a musical song, “under siege” with its eight minutes of epic, between choirs, accelerations, solos and moments of pathos with powerful riffs, “Treachery”, that is, the power ballad thy majestie – lasting power of the disc, with superferees, tenors and contrams recorded at Theater of Palermo, “Sword of Justice” with the typically Power incipit and a development in mid-time, and in conclusion the powerful “Time to Battle”, worthy Baroque epilogue of this debut on the long distance.
At the moment of greater peak of our local exits. it was certainly not easy to carve out their own space, and the Thy Majestie, marked at the Scarlet Records, found the inspiration for a record that transported to other worlds, with a great taste for the melodies and for the narrative moments, with the voice of the narrator who in songs of song made the listener fully dropped in the story told.
Even if that moment of expansion of the Power phenomenon in our lands is gradually spent. looking back makes it point out how some outputs were the result of great passion, and how the mixture thy majestie – lasting power of classical/lyrical music and the symphonic metal had different peculiarities from foreign production. With this analysis. thinking that from the first album the six Sicilian boys could have lived the big leap, it also makes you think about the ferment that was then around this kind.
In hindsight. this first exit could have been a ‘sliding door’, acting as a trampoline towards more important stages, and in the true sense of the word, since ours were contacted by the Kamelot as a shoulder. But our gave up, because the successor of this “The Lasting Power”, another concept, “Hastings 1066” was already in preparation.
However, this is another story. And another nice album.
