The finale of the first season of X-Men 97 is confirming the show Marvel Studios as one of the best of the year, and this week’s episode, the penultimate of the season, was nothing short of bonkers.
After the already sensational events of last week, X-Men 97 relaunched in an even more extreme way (eXtrema, Marvel comics fans would say) with the second chapter of the final narrative arc, entitled ‘Tolerance Is Extinction’: the Earth is on the brink of collapse after Magneto has used his extraordinary powers to reverse the Earth’s poles, and without an atmosphere to defend it, the planet risks collapsing at dawn, when the sun’s rays hit its surface. For this reason the X-Men organize two teamsone with the mission to stop Bastion and his still active Sentinels and the other sent to face Magneto to convince him to fix things, by hook or by crook.
While Jean and the others face Mr Sinister and Bastion, Xavier, Wolverine and Cyclops deal with Magneto now determined to end it all with humanity and eager to establish a new mutant regime that can forever improve the world and the condition of gene-x carriers: Rogue is also of this opinionand in fact the X-Woman turns her back on her family to join the lord of magnetism.
At the end of a brutal battle, when everything seems lost and with Xavier defeated by Magneto, Wolverine stabs Magneto with his claws, hitting him from behind, and killing him. However, with what appears to be his last gesture, Magneto attacks Wolverine with a cruel move: in a few moments, the adamantium metal that covers Logan’s skeleton is ripped from the Canadian mutant’s veins from Magneto’s powers.
