The case of the arrest of Giovanni Toti, who was placed under house arrest, was vehemently addressed during the May 9th episode of L’Aria che Tira, the La7 morning talk show hosted by David Parenzo. At a certain point Goffredo Buccini, reporter for Corriere della Sera, intervenes in the debate on the governor of Liguria, making a heavy self-criticism and going against the path in which the debate in the studio was developing: “We as journalists, as information, have a underlying problem for many years, we have been making such a sensational and unexamined exposition of the preliminary investigations, because there is no defence, giving only the Prosecutor’s version and never the defences, as to make the trial irrelevant. This is a perversion of the democratic system, because the trial is public and oral and the public must form an opinion there, but we instead make the public form an opinion on the preliminary phase of the investigation. “But what should we do?”, Parenzo then asks his guest. The journalist responds like this: “The defense should also speak at the same time. The positions of the prosecution are assumed for three pages and the position of the defense lawyer for ten lines, this is hypocrisy. This isn’t a criticism of you David, it’s a criticism of myself. It’s not a trial against L’Aria che Tira, but against myself. We must prevent wiretaps from coming out ahead of time.”

Parenzo doesn’t really seem to agree with Buccini and, with widespread chaos in the La7 broadcast, tries to explain his position on the judicial question: “At least being able to read the reasons that led the judges to put him under house arrest seems to me to be the minimum trade union. I have a duty to read these things, for two reasons, because people must know the reason why a top-level politician was placed under house arrest, it is fundamental. We also tried calling the lawyer.”
