Serpillo, Uci. Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions: successes achieved by Italy and challenges that await us

The President of the Italian Farmers’ Union (UCI), Mario Serpillo, examined the data recently published by the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA), underlining both the successes and the imminent challenges for Italy in field of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

“Italy’s success in achieving the emissions reduction objectives for the period 2013-2020 And a significant result, highlighted by the data provided by ISPRA”, declared Serpillo. “A constant decline in greenhouse gas emissions over the last thirty years, with a reduction of 21% compared to 1990, reflects the considerable efforts made in the sectors of energy, industry andagriculture, including the increasing adoption of renewable energy sources.”

“However,” Serpillo continued, “And It is essential to face the current challenges in the transport sector with determination to ensure sustainabilityto long-term environmental. The increase in emissions related to transport, confirmed by the recent ISPRA report, requires maximum attention and immediate action.

President Mario Serpillo reiterated the importance of adopting concrete measures to reduce the environmental impact of transport, underlining the needto of a transition towards more vehiclesù efficient and low-emissions, together with improved infrastructure to promote modesto of transport moreù sustainable.

“Despite the successes achieved in the 2013-2020 period,” added Serpillo, “Italy is facing significant challenges for the future. Exceeding the emission limits established by the European Union in 2023, especially in the transport sector, and the influences of the global economic crisis require continued efforts to ensure a transition to a low-carbon economy.”
