Rain during the night, rain during the morning and most likely also in the afternoon. It has never rained so much in Milan. To put it in black and white is Edoardo Ferrara, meteorologist from 3Bweather: “This is an exceptional event as it is of considerable significance for Lombardy, with rainfall accumulations of up to 120-130mm not localized, but over a very large area that extends from the Lodi area to Milanese, Brianza, Comasco and Varesotto”, the expert pointed out speaking with MilanoToday.
“To frame the event, just think that from 1850 to 1997 the daily rainfall record in May at the Milan Brera station was 98mm in 1990 – the expert pointed out -. It is therefore certainly one of the rainiest May days ever recorded in the last 170 years.”
On average in Milan in the month of May it rains around 95 millimeters. Today, therefore, more water fell from the sky than falls on average in all 31 days.
In Milan the rain is causing inconvenience, some of the city’s underpasses have flooded and the same fate has befallen several road arteries. The firefighters are carrying out around a hundred interventions. The Lambro flooded in several places (all in the Ponte Lambro district), while the Seveso came close to overflowing, but the lamination tank, emptied almost completely to face the day, absorbed the rainwater. A further increase in rainfall is expected in the afternoon.
