Corruption in Liguria, Garibaldi (Pd): “Toti’s unscrupulous management of Ligurian healthcare is now also under investigation”

Liguria. “The ease with which Toti declares that he has increased and therefore distorted the data during the Covid-19 pandemic to have more vaccines, in a moment of total emergency for the whole country, is shameful and unprecedented. It is the clear demonstration of the arrogance and unscrupulousness with which Toti and his council have governed the Region in recent years and how they would have liked to continue to govern it”. Thus the group leader of the Democratic Party in the Liguria Region Luca Garibaldi on the new lines emerging from the investigation involving Toti.

“For some time we have been denouncing the great flop in the management of Ligurian healthcare by this centre-right, determined to benefit the private sector to the detriment of the public. In the last 3 years alone, first with the Restart Plan and then with the 2024 actions to recover waiting lists, 100 million euros have been allocated to the purchase of services by accredited private providers. Sometimes with absurd methods that we had denounced in court, such as the 7.5 million euros for private heart surgery, even in the absence of waiting lists, or the automatic renewal of agreements with private individuals, without any planning”.

“That the investigation has now affected the management of the pandemic does not surprise us, in 2021 as opposition we had also asked for extraordinary advice precisely to address the topic. That Toti and the council have ‘got it over’ on the number of vaccines, falsifying the data, is an indecency which adds to a desolate way of administering, where the interest of the private individual wins over that of the citizen, due to a division of the candies. An unacceptable condition that must be remedied as soon as possible with new elections that give the Ligurians the opportunity to change the page”,

“We are faced with a bleak scenario, and in the next few days I think other elements will probably be added. But the issue is not so much the size of the investigation, the contents, the responsibilities. The magistrates will decide on that. The point is the political judgment that emerges from the Ligurian right, from Toti and from his ‘magic mortar’. The judgment is without appeal: arrogance, unscrupulousness, power for power’s sake, with the image of an à la carte institution, in which in a room subjects divide up pieces of the region, for sale, to support Toti’s electoral paths, with the complacency of the rest of the center-right, starting with the mayor of Genoa Bucci. The ‘Genoa model’, made up of exceptions, emergency logic, cancellation of spaces for public debate and discussion, and rhetoric of ‘doing’ has imploded. And the distancing of Rixi, Rosso, Bucci and the other actors of the local centre-right, who supported that system and for whom they are politically, together with Toti, the main representatives, sounds hypocritical”, concludes Garibaldi.

Davide Natale, secretary of the Ligurian Democratic Party, commenting on Rixi’s statements, broadens the discussion: “It is the government itself, through the mouth of its deputy transport minister Edoardo Rixi, who makes our own cry of alarm, about a possible complete blockade of the Liguria starting from the stop to construction sites, due to acts that risk being ‘null or flawed’ and which would cause ‘a chain effect not only on the port but on many contracts, also on the Alessandria port for example’. These are the consequences of the mismanagement of ‘public affairs’ by Toti and his entire centre-right, who, in order to satisfy personal selfishness and favor his private financiers, have forgotten the citizens. To this we must add the risk of not managing health-related problems.”

“What will happen to the projects for the construction of hospitals, the necessary interventions to reduce waiting lists and the PNRR funds. Liguria cannot afford delays and suffer slowdowns due to unscrupulous management of power. There are essential works, fundamental infrastructures that must be completed, investments in health, the environment and in the ecological and energy transition that cannot be lost and this can only be achieved with a council in full swing. Toti resign and give the Ligurians the administration they deserve. Liguria is not for sale and must now be put in a position to restart, and quickly. The responsibility lies not only with Toti but with the entire centre-right majority that supports him and no one can escape.”
