Peter Weir was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement

Peter Weir, born in 1944, stood out as a “turning point” in the renaissance of Australian cinema in the 1970s, before emerging as one of Hollywood’s leading directors. In Venice, at the Film Festival, Weir will receive the Golden Lion for his lifetime achievement.

He began his career behind the camera making short films and documentaries for Australian television and, in 1974, directed his first feature film, The machines that destroyed Paris (The cars that ate Paris).

International fame came with Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975), an enigmatic drama that insinuates itself into the dark folds of rural Australia at the end of the nineteenth century. The film has become a cult classic, admired for its dreamy atmosphere and open-ended narrative. They are followed The last wave (1977) e The broken years (1981), which cemented Weir’s reputation as a director capable of exploring profound themes with a distinctive visual style.

Weir’s transition to Hollywood occurred with Witness – The witness (1985), a thriller set in the Amish community of Pennsylvania that earned him his first Oscar nomination for best director.

He is the father of other successes such as Mosquito Coast (1986) e The fleeting moment (1989), a drama set in a 1950s preparatory academy that explores the theme of personal liberation through poetry and resistance to social conventions.

In the 1990s, Weir continued to explore different narratives with films such as Fearless – Without fear (1993) and The Truman Show (1998), a satire on the media society that anticipated many of the issues related to reality and privacy in the digital age. This film further cemented his reputation, earning him another Oscar nomination.

The pinnacle of his career came with Master & Commander – Challenge at the edge of the sea (2003), a maritime epic from the Napoleonic period that showed his ability to direct spectacular scenes without losing sight of character details.

With just 13 films in forty years, Weir has managed to maintain consistent quality, managing to win over both audiences and critics with his ability to tell profound and visually impactful stories. His career is an example of artistic completeness and commercial success, expertly balanced between the needs of thoughtful cinema and those of a global audience. The Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement received at the Venice International Film Festival in 2024 is recognition of a life dedicated to the art of cinematic storytelling, which has left an indelible mark on the world of cinema.
