CIVEZZANO. The Trento Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened a case for road homicide following the death of young Matteo Lorenzi, the 17-year-old cyclist who collided with a van yesterday afternoon – 9 May 2024 – in Civezzano.
The file is entrusted to deputy prosecutor Alessandro Clemente.
At the Sille di Civezzano, together with the medical and healthcare personnel, the carabinieri of the mobile radio unit of the Trento company and the agents of the local police of Alta Valsugana also intervened, together with the volunteer firefighters of the Civezzano and Fornace bodies. To allow rescue operations and then relief work, the road and the entire Sille link road were closed, with traffic diverted along provincial roads 17 and 71 through Civezzano and Torchio: the military personnel have collected all the elements necessary to reconstruct what happened before the removal of the van and the reopening of the road, which took place around 7.30pm.
There is little doubt that the driver of the van – a fifty-seven-year-old resident in the province of Belluno – invaded the roadway, as he himself admitted, desperate and in shock at what had happened.
It remains to be seen whether, as it appears, the man had started to leave the side road and join the main road after the car in front of Matteo (a camper van) had slowed down to give him the way.
The seventeen-year-old would not have understood the reason for the slowdown by overtaking the car without noticing the van and without the driver realizing his arrival, making the impact inevitable. However, it is about a hypothesis still under consideration of the police forces. And it will be the Prosecutor’s Office that will shed light on the responsibilities.
