The Lord of the Rings saga continues with a film about Gollum

Peter Jackson’s announcement

Peter Jackson will serve as producer with his wife Fran Walsh and fellow screenwriter Philippa Boyens. “It is an honor and a privilege to be able to return to Middle-earth with our good friend and collaborator Andy Serkis, who has unfinished business with that bastard Gollum! As long-time fans of the vast mythology created by Professor Tolkien, we are proud to be working with Mike De Luca, Pam Abdy and the entire Warner Bros. team on another epic adventure.” The deal covers two films in the franchise. “My treasure. The time has come to venture into the unknown again with my dear friends, the extraordinary and incomparable guardians of Middle-earth, Peter, Fran and Philippa,” commented Serkis, mimicking his character .

An animated film in 2024

Meanwhile, in 2024 Tolkien’s saga will return to the big screen. Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, authors of the script of Jackson’s trilogy, together with Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou are already busy writing “The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim”, an animated film directed by Kenji Kamiyama whose release is announced for December 13th. It will be set two centuries before the events of The Hobbit.

Return to the theater of the original trilogy

Warner Bros. had already alerted Lord of the Rings fans that something was cooking in 2023 after making a deal with Embracer Group AB which held part of the rights to JRR Tolkien’s books. Meanwhile, to satisfy the hunger of fans, the original trilogy which had swept the awards when it was first released between 2001 and 2003, returned to theaters in the summer in an expanded and remastered edition.
