A fatal road accident occurred this morning inside the “Limina” tunnel. The state road 682 “Jonio Tirreno” is temporarily closed to traffic.
MAMMOLA (REGGIO CALABRIA) – Another victim on the state road 682 “Jonio Tirreno”. A fatal road accident occurred around 9.30 am today, 10 May 2024, inside the “Limina” tunnel. The head-on collision appears to have occurred between two cars: a Jeep Cherokee and an Opel Mokka. The toll of the dramatic accident is one dead and one injured. The deceased person is believed to be a man originally from Catania, while the injured person is from Gerace.
The dynamics of the accident are yet to be clarified. The Siderno and Polistena firefighters and the Siderno traffic police officers intervened on site and will have to reconstruct the dynamics of the accident.
The state road, at this moment, is still closed to traffic in both directions to allow for rescue operations and the necessary investigations. Traffic is then diverted onto alternative roads, with on-site signs to guide motorists.
Anas teams and law enforcement are present on site to manage traffic safely and to reopen the section as quickly as possible.
For just under a week the Limina Tunnel has been the subject of maintenance work which takes place at night, from 6am onwards the entire state road is reopened to traffic but inside the long tunnel the carriageways (especially the one in the direction of Tirreniva – Jonica) are slightly narrowed by the presence of delineators both on the side and in the center of the road. This increases the danger of the road.
And, meanwhile, again this morning, the “Jonio – Tirrenico” state road was the protagonist of another road accident, fortunately without injuries.
