Gambero Rosso, which was able to view the document in the investigation into fake extra virgin olive oil in Roman restaurants, has revealed the list of establishments involved in the scandal which also put the health of consumers at risk
You will probably remember what emerged in January 2024 regarding a series of restaurants in Rome (including the cafeteria of the Ministry of Education) who purchased fake extra virgin olive oil knowing full well that it was a counterfeit product.
False in what sense? It turned out that the product actually contained a poor quality seed oil blend, spiked with chlorophyll to color the liquid e beta-carotene to change the flavor.

Now the names of the offending restaurants have been released. Gambero Rosso made them known who was able to view the document in the investigation documents.
It’s about a long list that concerns a network of venues located mainly in the capital, but not only. Restaurants, bars, cafeterias and shops that have betrayed consumer trust by offering fake oil as if it were top quality. The diversity of the places involved in various neighborhoods of the city, from Trastevere to the historic center, indicates a widespread practice especially in the most touristy areas of Rome.
It’s worrying to see how this fraud also managed to enter government buildingsas demonstrated by the involvement of the cafeteria of the Ministry of Education and Merit.
The risks of consuming fake extra virgin olive oil
The restaurateurs paid only 3 euros per liter for the oil, it is really difficult to believe that it could be a quality product. But it was not a simple deception, given that there are also risks to the health of consumers involved.
The mixture of oil and other substances used was in fact potentially dangerous, could cause damage to health if taken in excessive quantities. Beta carotene, one of the ingredients used to change the flavor and color of the oil, can cause conditions such as changes in skin pigmentation and an increased risk of lung cancer in smokers.
The consumption of beta carotene should then be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding, as it could pose risks to the health of the baby. Furthermore, the use of seed oils of unknown origin increases the risk of allergic reactions in predisposed individuals, since the safety and quality of the product cannot be guaranteed.
