Mario Monti, he of Loden and the technical government, dared to say that our Risorgimento would not have happened without the bloodshed of so many Italian patriots and so many Savoy and Garibaldi soldiers, and that even a new united Europe could not escape, in a defensive conflict constitutive of an alliance, to fight and therefore shed blood, their own and that of others.
The phrase is in itself banal: from Cain and Abel, from Gilgamesh to Samson, from Caesar and Attila, and so on, war, the shedding of blood and guts, with the contours of horror and destruction, is in the DNA of humans and in the dynamics of their evolution.
Everything has been determined in the history of states, nations, revolutions, through the “bloodshed” which Monti mentioned, or not??
So it is clear that today in the global village in which communication is essential to determining political phenomena, which in turn induce war phenomena, attention must be paid to the media exposure of the protagonists, to their interpretation of the facts, to the instrumental appeal to feelings basics like life, peace, tranquility.
To think that one of our children could be the victim of a conflict is unacceptable and unthinkable, after we Europeans have lived in the most industrious and complete peace since the Second World War, after the brief interlude in Serbia, until the invasion of Ukraine.
The feeling is widespread, indeed unanimously universal, but why not provide some food for thought on the concrete risks of a conflict that could affect us in the medium term?
But how, in almost all the constituencies for the European elections, there are those who propose a general accustomed to weapons and blood, and proudly wields rifles and machine guns in exhibitions, promotes every bloody self-defense, and then becomes a champion of a peace absolute, which means being helpless, defenceless, surrendering to the aggressor of the moment, who clearly appears to be the Russian Putin, the one wearing the t-shirt in front of the Kremlin.
But how, at every turn we talk about the Homeland, about Patriots, about “Italy called us ready for death”, and as an essential crutch of the government there is a “defeatist” not even well hidden or camouflaged, but pompous with his unpresentable complicity with a possible future enemy of ours, who is placing his military bases in Libya 100 miles from Sicily.
Hypocritical or instrumental pacifism, made if all is well of atavistic fears or worse of congenital cowardice, or even worse paid for, outside of history and logic, has led us to this third world war “pieces”, that we are fighting using other people’s blood, and pretending nothing happened; indeed inappropriately screaming “genocide” for the 35,000 in Gaza, shrugging for the hundreds of thousands of Ukraine, for those of Georgia or Chechnya.
Putin’s fifth mandate began with the tactical nuclear maneuvers and its deployment in Belarus: it is clear blackmail to the West! an argument that is used not to raise a serious alarm and provide a remedy in the most appropriate way, but to further weaken possible psychological defenses and suffer the diktats of an absolute and criminal power.
I hope and hope that the concessions with Hitler that brought about the Second World War will not be repeated with Putin; what is certain is that everything accelerated with the disorderly escape of the Americans from Afghanistan; their weakness aroused the aggression of the Rogue Countries, with what followed in Ukraine and Israel, confirming the terrible aphorism: “Si vis pacem, para bellum”.
