Genoa, 9 May. “Toti must resign”. This is the request that comes from the organizers of an ongoing event in Piazza De Ferrari in Genoa, headquarters of the Liguria Region. There are a few dozen people who, armed with placards, are asking for a step back from the Ligurian governor arrested (under house arrest) for corruption in an investigation by the Genoa prosecutor’s office which has caused an earthquake in regional politics.

“Against mafia and corruption in politics” is the banner with white writing on red fabric that stands out in the square, while the protest mixes several central issues for citizens, from high rents to cuts to healthcare.

The invitation to the regional councilors to do their part also stands out in the square: “distrust him. Regardless of criminal responsibilities” what emerges is an “unthinkable background” and at the same time “unbearable and unacceptable. What emerges from the investigation documents is a system of power that shamelessly bends the public administration to the interests of a few and that has no moral hesitations in dealing with members of mafia associations”. The invitation to those elected to the regional council is “to take a clear and unequivocal position, distrusting Toti and asking for his immediate resignation”.
