Giro d’Italia 2024, Top/Flop of the Day

Our usual column that takes stock of the day just ended at Tour of Italy 2024.

  • Pelayo Sanchez (Movistar): The young Spaniard manages to carve out a fantastic day of glory in his first season in a WorldTour team. Very good at waiting for the right moment to go on the run, not taking too many risks on the dirt roads and following Alaphilippe in his uphill attacks, and then overtaking him with heart and cunning in the final sprint. A complete racer that we will surely hear a lot about in the future.
  • Luke Plapp (Team Jayco AlUla): The only one among the men aiming for a good placing in the general classification who had the courage to attack personally. At the end he was practically the only one pulling with his head down, thus sacrificing the possibility of trying to win the stage. In the end he manages to gain 29 seconds plus an 8 bonus over the other big names, climbing six positions in the general classification.
  • Filippo Fiorelli (VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè): Very skilled in managing to slip into the right breakaway and tenacious in managing to resist as much as possible at the head of the race in a very tough stage and perhaps not completely suited to his characteristics. He confirms to be very combative in this first week of the Giro.
  • Astana Qazaqstan: Very active in the first kilometers to try to put someone in the breakaway, the Kazakh team missed the right attempt and then failed to make up for it, ending up with four riders in the main group and a tenth place as the best result of the day.
  • EF Education-EasyPost: For the US team it’s a similar story to that of Astana: many attacks in the first part, but the breakaway slips away. Then they try to make up for it with the courageous Mikkel Honoré, whose attack after the second dirt sector however leads to nothing, and with Andrea Piccolo, who at the end manages to at least take fourth place.
  • Matteo Trentin (Tudor Pro Cycling): Big heart for the 34 year old, who is often in the attack attempts that form in the first part of the stage. However, a lot of energy was spent in this phase and their lack is felt in the decisive moment, with the Trentino rider practically the first to lose contact among the fugitives.
